The homonymous capital is the largest town in Crete, the main port and the economical center of the island. Heraklion ( Iraklio ) is situated on the center of the north side of Crete it is connected by air and sea with the rest of Greece, with daily routes. The town of Heraklion (Iraklio) is the main access to the ancient palace in Knossos, only 4 km from the town, and the archaeological site in Festos.
The town also offers many more historical images such as the famous preserved Venetian buildings, many churches and monasteries from the Byzantine years and of course the Archaeological Museum with findings from the Minoan period and the Historical Museum with exhibits from the Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish eras.
