General Information




Kasos It is the southest island of Dodekanisa and it is found between Karpathos and Crete. Small and rocky island, but with big naval tradition. Today it has been abandoned by the bigger part of it's population, that migrate mainly in foreigner countries and specially in America. It has 62 square km. size and the permanent residents which are about 1.500, deal mainly with the agriculture, livestock-farming and fishery.Constitute from five main settlements in near distance between them.It does not has a lot of sandy beaches, after her ground is mainly steep. Kasos is ideal place for quiet holidays, same for those who they love walking.



Discoveries that came in the light in Ellinokamara testify that Kasos has prohistoric roots and in particular took part in Trojan War, while it was under the sovereignty of Kos. In the Classic season it belonged in the Athenian Alliance and were acquaintance for her commercial activity.



In the years of Ottoman domination it accepted a lot of raids and destructions, that however did not stand obstacle in the development of the island and it maintained their customs, until today. The attendance of fleet in Nationalliberty Fight costed in the island the big slaughter in May 1824.



Afterwards Kasos followed the other Dodecanese. It deserves,to mark that Kassian people took part in the opening up of the canal Suez, while the immigrants of the island, in Egypt and America helped in the growth of Kasos with the foundation of schools and work beneficial to the public.
