Museums in Chios:
Archaeological Museum of Chios: The Archaeological museum of Chios is located at Museiou str, about 100m southern of the port.The museum of Chios was constructed between 1966 and 1971 in an area of 2500 sq meters. The building is comprised of exhibition rooms, storerooms, workshops and offices which cover an area of 1200 sq. meters.
Byzantine Museum of Chios: The Byzantine museum of Chios is located right at the main square of the island, called Vounaki. The building of the museum is the old othoman mosque.The Byzantine Museum in Chios is contained within the 19th Century Ottoman mosque which is located in the central town square. This museum has been in operation since 1980 and contains items that were donated from collections as well as findings discovered in local excavations. The dates of the items on display range from the Early Christian period to the post-Byzantine period (5th – 18th century).
Justiniani Palace - Museum: The Justiniani Palace, is a small building right at the main entrance of the Castle of Chios. It was the house of the Genoan family of Justiniani who ruled the island during a larg7e period of the middle ages. Now it serves as a small medieval museum.
Chios Maritime Museum: The Chios Maritime Museum. Chios is well known for having a strong maritime presence over the years. Even now Chians are the owners of more than half of the whole greek merchadise fleet, one of the biggest worldwide.
Koraes Library - Argenti Folklore Museum: The Koraes Library and Argenti Folkore Museum are located in the same building at Koraes str. in the center of town, next to the Cathedral, near to the south end of Aplotaria str. Aplotaria str is the high street market of Chios. Koraes Library is one of the oldest and biggest Libraries in Greece, certainly a worth visiting monument. You may see the books os Adamantios Koraes, some of them given to him as a gift by the French Emperor Napoleon.
Chios City Public Art Gallery: The Public Art Gallery of Chios is located at 1, Andreas Syggros str. in the city center just a few meters away from the main Chios square, called Vounaki square.
The Folkloric Museum of High School of Kallimasia: The museum is a folkloric exhibition of a traditional village of the south of Chios, dated to the period between the end of 19th and the begging of the 20th century. You may enjoy the represenation of a traditional house (kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms, dining room), a traditional coffee house (kafenio), a hut as well as traditional stores, for example a small oil press factory, tailor shop, shoe maker shop etc.
